Complete the activity on the sheet passed out in class.

After, post to your blog in response to the following 3-2-1 activity:

  • 3 things you learned about mass, density, volume, weight, and the relationship between them.

  • 2 things you are still wondering about or have questions on

  • 1 comment on someone else's blog  that is a thoughtful and specific response to something they wrote today in their 3-2-1.

October 10, 2012

Yesterday you measured the mass, volume, and weight of objects with various tools.  Today you are going to be doing a similar activity.

Please move through the stations that have been set up to find out the weight, mass, and volume of the 10 cubes.

Tips:

VOLUME:

For the volume in cmᵌ, do the equation length x width x height

Example:  length 2 cm, width 2 cm, height 2 cm

2 x 2 x 2= 8 cm

DENSITY:=

Density equals mass divided by volume.  The equation is D=  M/V.  Using a calculator, divide the mass of each object by its volume.  There are two possible numbers depending on whether you use ml or cmᵌ.  Just stay consistent.

Example:  Mass= 8 grams ,  Volume = 4 cm

8/4 = 2    The density is 2 (g/cm)

When finished, answer the following questions:

1.  What was similar about each of the cubes?  Were you surprised by the similarities?

2.  What was different about each of the cubes?  Were you surprised by the differences?

3.  While the cubes all have the same volume, why was their weight and mass different?

4.  What new understandings do you have now about density?
